Pow Wow

Hungarians traditionally adore indigenous-like culture. My dad's favorite childhood books are the adventures of Winnetou by Karl May, the German writer, so I kind of grew up with the idea of living in harmony with nature. Indeed, I am completely aware now that it wouldn't be okay here, but with the most respectful intention during my kindergarten years, the coolest Carnival (spring celebration) costumes in Budapest were definitely made in their style including headbands. I was a proud little “Indian” more than one time. My best friend had a dream catcher. Then I had to wait decades to meet our distant cousins.

We travelled in North America, saw ancient caves, bought jewelry with traditional symbols, saw petroglyphs and modern casinos, visited the National Museum of the American Indian in Washington DC, discovered some awesome sculptures and paintings in smaller galleries, and of course moved to the most diverse metropolis in the world where I meet hundreds of other cultures, but still: where are they, where is the First Nation in Toronto? Why don't we have restaurant chains serving sweet potato salads and crumble pie? Because unfortunately they became the least visible in this narrows (as known as “Taronto”) that was styled “tkaronto” by the Mohawk, meaning "where there are trees standing in the water". To understand I listen to Rosanna Deerchild's guests on one of my favorite CBC radio program, Unreserved. But there is still so much more to learn and I'm not sure where and how to ask.

I found out that the easiest way to meet indigenous friends and witness their beautiful culture is participating Pow Wows. I was invited to the big one at Fort York and a week later to N'Swo N'Shiimenhig Endaayaat (Three Sisters' House). These are real, not tourist attractions, although could be. It is a celebration of Earth and heritage, and a venue to meet different tribes. There is no Pow Wow border between Canada and the USA, it's all one land, the chief stated. He told us about taking care of the eagle feathers, that should never fell off. Only certain elders sould pick it up if that would happen to these precious symbols. Let's appreciate Mother Nature's gifts.

Everybody was welcome to listen to the ancient holy soul songs, prayers, music, and also welcome to join the common dances no matter where we came from. The only restriction is that recording devices are forbidden during the most spectacular rituals such as the opening Flag Dance. Other than that part is not shareable with you guys, I don't even mind, because this way my focus was not distracted. My heart could beat with this fantastic rhythm from the beginning of time.
